Lifeguard Job Description 2007

Lifeguards are required to be American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certified.  They must conduct themselves in a professional and friendly manner and maintain a clean and professional appearance.

On the stand the lifeguard is there to prevent accidents and help swimmers in trouble. This is the first priority.  Therefore, they must:

  • Remain alert and attentive while on the lifeguard stand

  • Constantly scan the pool looking for distressed swimmers

  • Enforce all pool rules fairly and consistently

Lifeguards must NOT:

  • Chat with patrons; they may only answer important questions that cannot wait until break

  • Eat while on stand

  • Sleep, use cell phones, or read on stand

Off the stand, a lifeguard’s job is to maintain the facility and help the patrons.  This is the second priority.  This is as much a part of lifeguarding as on-stand duties.  Therefore, they must:

  • Enforce all pool rules fairly and consistently

  • Check and Record Pool Chemistry

  • Adjust Pool Chemicals

  • Refer Pool Chemistry problems to supervisor promptly

  • Refer any problems or complaints to head guard and    SPMC Management

  • Pick up debris and trash on pool deck and grounds

  • Straighten chairs

  • Wipe off tables and counters

  • Clean and maintain restrooms, including stocking all supplies

  • Empty trashcans and take trash to curb or dumpster for pickup

  • Vacuum Pool

  • Clean Pool Tiles

  • Clean Skimmers

  • Greet and check in members and guests in a friendly manner

  • Develop and maintain a friendly relationship with members and guests

  • Answer all questions politely

  • Staff & Sell Concessions where applicable

Lifeguards work a minimum 4 hour shift. They take a 15 minute break every hour (with some exceptions). During this break time, the lifeguard’s first responsibility is to make sure the facility is clean (including restrooms) and the pool chemistry is balanced. After they have taken care of their responsibilities, the lifeguard is free to make phone calls, rest, and eat.

To arrange an interview, contact Desiree Kaman at 770-993-7492 or e-mail her at desiree@searspool.com. We will answer all your questions and enroll you in a lifeguard training course in time for the summer. But hurry! Our classes fill quickly.
